Ross Rosenberg is blunt about his own record. More than half the decisions he regrets, he made while angry. Probably three quarters. And the part that makes it dangerous is that anger does not announce itself as impairment. When he is angry he feels sharper than usual, as though he could outthink anyone in the room. He calls that false power syndrome, and it is precisely the state a narcissist is trying to produce, because a fight is the one contest they reliably win.
Observe Don’t Absorb is his answer to that. The principle behind it is George Bernard Shaw’s: never wrestle with pigs, you get dirty and besides, the pig likes it. The technique is a way of remaining present and composed without taking the bait, which he distinguishes carefully from the dissociation a trauma clinician would worry about. This is deliberate and controlled rather than involuntary.
One hour, and it is useful in a way that is unusual for material about narcissism. It works for a client who cannot leave the relationship, or has decided not to, and needs to function inside it. It also works for the clinician, since staying regulated in front of an activating client is the same skill. He also says something most therapists will not, which is that boundaries alone do not work here. They bounce off, in his phrase, like Nerf bullets. Boundaries protect a client in danger, and they do not change the other person.
You’ll walk away with
- False power syndrome: why anger feels like clarity and functions as the opposite
- The induced conversation, how a narcissist starts one, and how a client declines it
- Why boundaries alone do not change a pathological narcissist, and what they are still for
- The technique itself, with its six tenets
- Predictive awareness, the preparation the technique depends on
- Observing as controlled, healthy dissociation, and how it differs from the pathological kind
- Nine fantasy defence techniques, each a way of holding position under pressure
- Mindfulness applied specifically to being manipulated in real time
- Magical thinking and the codependency delusion, and the beliefs that keep a client trying the same thing
- Roller coaster amnesia, and why the last episode stops counting
- Why the technique works for a client who cannot or will not leave
- Its use by the clinician, for staying regulated with an activating client
