PTSD has sometimes been called a memory disorder, and the description holds up better than most shorthand. Intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, nightmares, the sense that something from years ago is happening now: these are what a memory looks like when it was never properly filed away.
Memory reconsolidation is the process by which that can change, and Jennifer Sweeton’s most useful point about it is that you may already be doing it. It is not a modality. It is what is happening underneath several of them. EMDR does it. So do EFT, brainspotting and neuromodulation approaches, by different routes. Learn the mechanism and you can see what those methods have in common, use the steps inside whatever you already practise, and make better decisions about which training to take next.
Three hours from a clinician who trained as a neuroscientist before she trained as a psychologist, and specifically in affective neuroscience, which is the study of what emotion looks like in the brain. She spends the first part on how memory actually works, then on how a traumatic memory is encoded differently, then on what reconsolidation is doing and why it reduces symptoms. She keeps it experiential, stepping through techniques rather than only describing them, and she tells participants plainly to sit out anything that feels distressing to try.
You’ll walk away with
- The brain region responsible for autobiographical, explicit, declarative memory, taught in a way you will not forget afterwards
- How a traumatic memory is encoded differently from an ordinary one, and why that produces the symptoms it does
- Four types of memory error that can occur during trauma processing, and what each one looks like in session
- A proposed mechanism of action for memory reconsolidation, meaning why it reduces post-trauma symptoms rather than simply that it does
- Two basic memory reconsolidation techniques, practised rather than described
- What EMDR, EFT, brainspotting and neuromodulation have in common underneath their surface differences, and one clear way EMDR departs from the other two
- How to fold reconsolidation steps into work you are already doing, rather than adopting another model
- Enough grounding to choose your next training deliberately instead of by reputation
