Level 2A Supervision: Clinical and Professional Online Supervision Skills
Most supervisors who now work online were never trained to. They moved a practice built in person onto a screen, kept the structure, and adapted as they went. Much of it transfers. Some of it does not, and the parts that do not are the parts that matter: reading a supervisee who is only visible from the shoulders up, judging when to intervene without the cues a shared room gives you, holding a group when you cannot see how people are sitting.
Renee McDonald has spent twenty years working online in Australia and now trains supervisors to do it. She is a PACFA accredited supervisor and a registered international online clinical supervisor with ACTO, and she directs her own online therapy training organisation. This course is the practical end of that: not a case for online supervision, which the profession has already settled, but the skills it actually requires.
Four hours, and she is clear it is an advanced course. It assumes you hold a degree, have at least five years of clinical practice behind you, and have worked online before. She covers the supervisory alliance and how to build it at a distance, the timing of interventions, emotional attunement through a screen, and managing your own reactions when you cannot step out of the room. She also covers the structural side: contracting, session planning, theoretical models, mandatory reporting, international supervisory requirements and risk management.
You’ll walk away with
- An honest self-assessment of your current supervision skills, and a personal development plan built from it
- Evidence-based approaches to building and repairing the supervisory alliance when you are not in the same room
- Timing: when to intervene in a supervision session and when to stay out of the way, without the cues a shared room provides
- Emotional attunement through a screen, and managing your own reactions in a format that gives you nowhere to go
- Facilitating group supervision online, which fails differently from individual work
- Contracting and session planning for online supervision specifically
- Theoretical models of supervision, and choosing one deliberately
- Mandatory reporting and risk management when your supervisee may be in another jurisdiction
- International supervisory requirements, and what changes when your supervisee is not in your country
