Creative Supervision Conversations for Therapists and Coaches
Supervision has a way of settling. The same questions, the same cases, the same shape of hour, and after a while both people are meeting a requirement rather than doing anything. Nobody decides this. It just happens, and it is difficult to name from inside.
Renee McDonald’s answer is to change the way the conversation opens. Approaching a supervision issue from an unexpected angle loosens thinking quickly, and it lets humour and play into a room that has become earnest. Her line is that if you look at something differently you tend to arrive somewhere different, which sounds obvious until you notice how rarely supervision does it.
Three hours, and it is unusual in being written for both sides of the relationship. A supervisor gets new ways in. A supervisee gets a way to ask for more from an hour they are paying for, which is a conversation many find difficult to start. She works with parallel process throughout, on the basis that what is happening between supervisor and supervisee is often a version of what is happening between supervisee and client, and that noticing it is where the useful material sits.
You’ll walk away with
- Ways to start a genuinely different conversation in a supervision session
- Creative models applied to supervision, with the reasoning for when each fits
- Parallel process used deliberately, so what happens in the room becomes information rather than noise
- Reflective practice that strengthens the relationship rather than just documenting it
- Approaches to self-care that go past the standard advice
- Curiosity and creative thinking carried back into the therapeutic work itself
- How a supervisee can get more out of supervision, and how to raise it
- Case studies of creative practice rather than description alone
- Something to do when supervision has become a box to tick
