Mastering Crises, Tough Moments and Difficult Dynamics in Psychotherapy
Experienced clinicians do not need reminders as to the basic theory and techniques in their clinical practice. However, they need tools for owning even the toughest clinical moments with clients in order to capture opportunities for deepening of the therapeutic alliance, increased clarity and ability to change on the part of clients. Seasoned therapist need awareness and present moment engagement skills in order to prevent rigid implementation of techniques. With these skills at hand, clinicians can increase their effectiveness, timing, as well as their satisfaction and engagement with therapeutic work.
This course focuses on Mindfulness-based and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-based methods for not only managing tough moments in sessions, but harnessing them as intervention opportunities to enhance the therapeutic alliance, provide boundary-related learning opportunities for clients, and enhance clinicians’ effective timing of using interventions and techniques already in their clinical toolbox that tend to get misused when the clinician themselves is flooded or thrown by the tough moment with a client.
- Define and understand skillful intervention skills for assessing the most challenging clinical conversations and knowing when and how to intervene effectively.
- Identify the methods for defusing and effectively managing difficult therapeutic interactions and model how to do so for others
- Learn evidence-supported techniques for improving your psychological flexibility across all the clients in your caseload.
- Learn brain and systems-based methods for addressing difficult clinical interactions, crisis situations and demonstrate skills for understanding of the skills of “moment ownership.”
