Practical Strategies for Responding to Personality Disorders

Most courses on personality disorders are written for therapists. Hanna Nowicki built this one for the people who are not: the housing officer, the case manager, the employment consultant who has a job to do and a client everyone else has given up on. Twelve hours, one session per disorder.

Hanna Nowicki developed this course twenty years ago, and it came from what people kept telling her. They were not therapists, they were not going to become therapists, and nobody was training them. They worked in housing, in employment services, in case management. They had a task they were mandated to complete, and a client who was impulsive, or non-compliant, or described by everyone around them as manipulative. They wanted to do the job well and had nothing to work from.

Her observation about the system is blunt. People with personality disorders are too often managed by under-resourced services without guidance from the mental health system, which produces poor case management, unresolved situations and repeated crises, and costs far more than getting it right the first time.

Twelve hours, a session for each of ten disorder types, and a final session of case studies. Borderline presentations get particular attention, because they are the ones most human service professionals find hardest and most frightening, especially where there is chronic suicidality involved. Her argument throughout is that behaviour which looks bewildering has meaning, and that once you can read it, the frustration drops and the work becomes possible.

You’ll walk away with

  • A session on each of ten personality disorder types rather than a single overview of all of them
  • Borderline presentations covered in depth, including what to do when a client is chronically suicidal
  • The meaning behind behaviour that reads as manipulation, non-compliance or impulsivity
  • Strategies for the worker who is not a therapist and has a mandated task to complete
  • Why the same client produces a crisis in one service and not in another
  • How to adapt your approach across disorder types rather than applying one method to everyone
  • Treatment modalities outlined, so you know what a client may be receiving elsewhere and can work alongside it
  • Application in clinical settings and in workplaces
  • Case studies, learning activities and film illustrations rather than a lecture

As Founder of TATRA, Nowicki brings a unique combination of legal expertise, psychology training, and extensive frontline experience to her teaching. Her remarkable career journey - from District Court Judge in Poland dealing with family law to Senior Practitioner in South Australia's Statewide Suicide Intervention Program - gives her unparalleled insight into both systemic and individual approaches to mental health crisis intervention. Her multilingual abilities and multicultural practice experience add crucial cultural competency to her training programs.

Nowicki's expertise spans suicide risk assessment, personality disorders, self-injury, depression, anxiety disorders, client engagement techniques, workplace debriefing, and multicultural mental health practice. She specialises in training professionals who work with high-risk populations, including those in child protection, correctional services, and community mental health settings.

What sets her training apart is real-world credibility. Nowicki doesn't just teach from textbooks - she draws from decades of direct practice in suicide prevention, child protection, and mental health services. Her work with government organisations like Centrelink, Correctional Services, and Housing SA demonstrates her ability to translate clinical knowledge into practical strategies that work in diverse professional settings.

For your practice, expect to gain specific techniques for engaging resistant clients, practical tools for suicide risk assessment, and frameworks for working effectively with personality disorders. Her interactive, high-energy teaching style particularly benefits practitioners who need confidence-building alongside skill development.
