Schema-Focused Cognitive Therapy: Advanced Conceptualisation and Treatment for Challenging Clients
Most clinicians have standard CBT and a set of tools that manage symptoms competently. Fewer have the deeper schema-level work, and the reason is practical rather than intellectual: pure schema therapy is a long-term proposition, and a significant part of any caseload will not be in the room long enough for it. So the choice becomes depth you cannot deliver, or symptom management that does not hold for the clients whose problems are lifelong.
Schema-focused cognitive therapy is the middle path, and it is what this course teaches. It sits between insight-oriented work and evidence-based CBT, borrowing from attachment theory, psychodynamic thinking and emotion-focused technique, while keeping the here-and-now interventions that make CBT usable. Where standard CBT works on the current thought, schema work goes at the lifelong pattern underneath it, and it uses the therapeutic relationship itself as leverage in a way standard protocols do not.
Eight hours from a clinician trained at the Beck Institute. He covers where this approach sits against CBT, DBT, ACT and schema therapy proper, how to introduce the model to a client so they stay rather than drop out, the eighteen maladaptive schemas in depth, mode work in individual and group settings, and how to add schema-level work to a CBT protocol you are already running so that a client stays well rather than simply getting better.
You’ll walk away with
- Where schema-focused cognitive therapy sits relative to standard CBT, DBT, ACT and full schema therapy, and when each is the right call
- Why the long-term nature of pure schema therapy rules it out for part of your caseload, and what to do instead
- How to socialise a client to the model in a way that builds engagement and reduces dropout
- The eighteen maladaptive schemas, in depth rather than as a list
- Behavioural pattern-breaking for cycles that have run for decades
- Schema mode work, in individual sessions and in groups
- How to augment a CBT protocol you are already using with deeper-level work, rather than starting again
- Using the therapeutic relationship deliberately as a change mechanism
- Application to the presentations that resist standard approaches: emotional dysregulation, impulsive responses out of proportion to their trigger, self-destructive behaviour, poor insight, rule-breaking, and depression that has not responded to treatment
