The Ten-Stage Self-Love Recovery™ Treatment Program: Getting To The Codependency Cure™

It started as three stages and became ten over twenty-five years. It grew because the standard treatment for codependency kept failing, including on Ross Rosenberg himself, who noticed he was a therapist specialising in it and still choosing the same relationships. This is the model he built instead.

Ross Rosenberg had an unusually direct piece of evidence that treatment for codependency was not working. He was a therapist who specialised in it, he worked hard in his own therapy, and he kept ending up in the same relationships. If it was not working on someone who understood it professionally and was committed to the process, the problem was not the client.

The ten-stage model grew out of that over roughly twenty-five years. It was three stages once. Each time he returned to his own therapy he found himself looking at the same material, the same memories, the same anger, and understanding it differently, and the sequence of those shifts became the sequence he started replicating with clients. He is careful about the difference between building a model and inventing one: his stated intent was to stay clinically accountable to the field rather than assemble something that merely sounded coherent.

Five and a half hours on the current version of it, which he describes as the scaffolding rather than the building. Ten stages, in order, from hitting bottom through to what he calls self-love abundance, with the middle stages doing the hardest work: withdrawing from the addiction, preparing for the narcissist’s reaction, setting boundaries in a hostile environment, and then resolving the attachment trauma underneath all of it. He is also explicit that no therapist works prescriptively from stage one, and that the model is a map rather than a script.

You’ll walk away with

  • The full ten-stage sequence, each stage defined and placed in relation to the others
  • Stage one, hitting bottom, and why the model does not begin until a client arrives there
  • Withdrawal from what he frames as an addiction, and why he treats it that way rather than as a habit or a choice
  • The stages that deal with the narcissist’s reaction, and why preparation has to come before any boundary is set
  • Resolving and integrating attachment trauma as the stage where the change becomes durable
  • The later stages: discovering self-love, building an external foundation for it, and what he means by abundance
  • The Self-Love Deficit Disorder and Self-Love Abundance pyramids, and how he uses them to organise a treatment plan
  • Attachment trauma, core shame and pathological loneliness treated as the causes rather than the symptoms
  • Why the model prohibits sex and romance during certain stages, and what that is protecting
  • How to use a stage framework with a client who does not arrive in stage order, which is most of them

Introduction
Meet Your Instructor

Individuals trapped in destructive relationships with narcissists - and the practitioners trying to help them break free from what seems like magnetic attraction to toxic partners - may need more than traditional codependency treatment to understand and heal the deeper patterns that keep them stuck. Ross Rosenberg has spent over 35 years developing groundbreaking theories about what he calls "The Human Magnet Syndrome," becoming one of the world's leading experts in narcissistic abuse recovery and the pioneer of "Self-Love Deficit Disorder™" as a revolutionary replacement for outdated codependency concepts.

As CEO/Owner of Self-Love Recovery Institute and bestselling author of The Human Magnet Syndrome (200,000+ copies sold in 12 languages, Amazon bestseller since 2013), Rosenberg brings unique expertise that combines clinical excellence with massive global reach. His 34+ million YouTube views, 310,000+ subscribers, and top 2% globally-ranked Self-Love Recovery Podcast demonstrate his exceptional ability to make complex psychological concepts accessible to millions worldwide. His latest work, The Codependency Revolution: Fixing What Was Always Broken, introduces his revolutionary Self-Love Deficit Disorder™ concept, fundamentally reshaping how we understand and treat codependent patterns.

Rosenberg's expertise spans codependency (Self-Love Deficit Disorder™), narcissistic abuse recovery, pathological narcissism, trauma treatment, gaslighting recovery, and what he describes as helping people break free from their "magnetic" attraction to partners who hurt them. His approach recognises that traditional codependency treatment often fails because it doesn't address the deeper self-love deficits that create vulnerability to narcissistic partners. He specialises in helping survivors of narcissistic abuse understand why they repeatedly choose harmful partners, develop the self-love necessary to break these patterns, and recover from the complex trauma that narcissistic relationships create.

What sets his training apart is theoretical innovation combined with authentic vulnerability. Rosenberg doesn't just teach recovery techniques - he shows practitioners and clients how to understand the unconscious "magnetic" dynamics that draw codependent individuals to narcissistic partners. His willingness to share his own recovery journey creates the authentic connection that facilitates deep healing in both professional and personal contexts.

For your practice, expect to gain specific techniques for treating narcissistic abuse trauma, tools for helping clients develop genuine self-love, and frameworks for understanding the complex dynamics that keep people trapped in toxic relationships. His approach particularly benefits practitioners working with domestic abuse survivors, those treating complex trauma presentations, or clinicians wanting to develop expertise in narcissistic abuse recovery.

Quick Win: Rosenberg's "Observe Don't Absorb" technique helps clients to create emotional boundaries with narcissistic partners - sometimes providing the first sense of personal power they've experienced in years while building the foundation for deeper recovery work.
