This workshop is directed at exploring the link between trauma, dissociation and both dissociative and personality disorders. We will discuss how the brain is changed by trauma and how dissociative and personality disorders develop through attachment and attunement disruptions early in life. Although many of these disorders are seen as extremely difficult to treat, it is often simply that we are using methods that won’t work with this level of reactivity initially.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify at least three regions of the brain affected by trauma.
  • Describe the mechanism of shut down and dissociation.
  • State the main characteristics of the major personality disorders and differentiate.
  • Name at least two signs of dissociation and dropping into different regions of the brain.
  • Practice at least 2 methods for keeping clients engaged and connected in the process without dissociating.
  • Describe how to use specific tools and methods for encouraging emotional growth and regulation in patients.

As Owner/Therapist at Life Recovery Consulting and Executive Director of The Tristn Jevon Center for Recovery, Cox brings unique expertise grounded in both professional training and 33+ years of personal recovery from addiction (clean since 1988). His book The Life Recovery Method: Treating Autism From a Trauma Perspective represents groundbreaking work in understanding how developmental differences affect trauma processing and recovery. His role as President-Elect of the American Counseling Association of Missouri and presentations at Autism Society national conferences demonstrate his leadership in advancing trauma-informed autism treatment approaches.

Cox's expertise spans trauma treatment from an autism perspective, addiction counseling, complex trauma and PTSD, mindfulness-based interventions, dissociative disorders, and what he calls helping clients "live vulnerably in an uncertain world with real joy, connection and courage."
