Treatment of ADHD in Children and Adolescents
A child meets the criteria, gets the diagnosis, and the family goes home with a label that does not describe most of what is actually hard. The inattention is real, but the emotional regulation is what ends the friendship, and the missed social cue is what makes school unbearable. Neither is in the diagnostic criteria, and both get less attention in training than they deserve.
Tish Taylor works on exactly that ground. She is a licensed psychologist and a licensed school psychologist with close to thirty years in practice, almost all of it with children, adolescents and young adults. She teaches child development, consults to schools, wrote a book on parenting a child with ADHD, and has young children of her own, which she is open about when talking to parents.
Five and a half hours, and it is a treatment course rather than a diagnostic one, though it covers assessment measures, differential diagnosis and comorbidity before moving on. Then executive function, using a framework a young person can be walked through and made part of. Emotional regulation and the work on perspective that sits underneath it. Social skills, and the different reasons a child misses a cue. Parent training, which she treats as non-negotiable, including the components that matter most. Homework, which she handles as the long-running source of friction it usually is, with practical strategies and a frank view of when to bring in outside help. School continuity of care and whole-school approaches. And what the evidence says about exercise, and about media and gaming.
You’ll walk away with
- The secondary symptoms that cause the most difficulty, and why they are not in the diagnostic criteria
- Emotional regulation in ADHD, including the perspective work that sits underneath it
- Social skills difficulties and their different causes, which need different responses
- Executive function explained in a way a child or teenager can use, and made part of their own plan
- Clinical assessment measures, differentiating ADHD from other conditions, and identifying comorbidity
- Parent training: the components that matter, and why leaving it out undermines everything else
- Homework strategies that reduce the friction rather than adding to it
- When coaching or tutoring is the right referral, and what it can and cannot do
- Working with schools, including continuity of care and whole-school check-in approaches
- What the research supports on exercise as part of a treatment plan
- Media and gaming, and how they bear on presentation and on treatment
- Working with families rather than only with the child, across preschool to young adult
