Treatment of ADHD in Children and Adolescents
ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood. Around 1 in 20 Australians have ADHD, and more than 3 in 4 children diagnosed with ADHD continue to experience symptoms into adulthood. ADHD affects the brain’s executive functioning – the ability to self-regulate and control thoughts, words, actions and emotions.
ADHD can have lifelong impacts, including on educational achievement, occupational attainment, and future relationships. These impacts place significant pressure on psychologists, counsellors, therapists and institutions. There is a continued need to learn about the newest research and treatment methods, raising awareness and education in an attempt to reduce the burden and lifelong impact that ADHD may have.
This course will provide an updated and comprehensive understanding of ADHD, focused on children and adolescents. You will gain both broad and detailed information about this disorder and how it presents. Specific tools for assessment, strategies for treatment and interventions will be the focus of this new online course presented by Dr Tish Taylor, therapist, academic teacher and author. Additionally, you will gain good understanding of how current lifestyles are impacting ADHD.
Learning Objectives:
- Distinguish and implement appropriate measures for clinical assessment of ADHD
- Learn how ADHD is differentiated from other disorders and co-morbid disorders
- Implement current scientific understanding of Executive Functioning and compare and contrast that when diagnosing ADHD
- Identify and incorporate research based treatments for ADHD in children and adolescents within your practice
- Identify and incorporate therapeutic strategies and interventions for children with ADHD and their families
You will practice strategies that will facilitate continuity of care when working with schools, and you will be able to describe current research on the use of media, social media, and gaming and how it impacts a child or adolescent with ADHD. You will be equipped with tools for assessment and effective clinical interventions for both your clients and their families.
